Darija course at Riyad El Cadi

Understand the people you meet: The Moroccans are warm-hearted, fun-loving and eager to communicate. Most of them speak French, a lot speak English. The most common language however, is Darija – the local dialect. The ideal ice-breaker and thus the start for spirited and funny communication is knowing at least some phrases of the local dialect Darija. You may have a clearer picture of Moroccan culture and mentality when you know how Moroccans greet (they spend ages on greeting…), how they compliment each other and what they think important to know. Knowing some bits of Darija, makes you feel even more comfortable in Marrakech.

We offer private language courses:

Zarah, our experienced teacher, will introduce you to the local dialect of Darija with lots of enthusiasm. You will have the opportunity to learn greetings, some basic questions, numbers and common phrases. Be shown phrases that will make your negotiations in the souk more successful or the proper way to thank someone for inviting you to their Friday’s couscous. With her Darija course, she will guide you through the pronunciation and cultural context of the language and give you a deeper understanding of Moroccan social interaction.

Moroccan Darija is the most widely spoken language in Morocco and is used in everyday conversations (along with the many Berber dialects). Darija is no modern standard Arabic, but a particular dialect of Arabic specific to Morocco. Eastern Arabic speakers usually don’t understand Moroccan Darija. Our lessons are given in the local dialect, Darija. If you prefer to take classes in classical or modern standard Arabic, we are also happy to offer those.

Your instructor will come to you at the riad and tailor the private lesson to your needs and knowledge. Children are most welcome.
